23 Dec 2014: Free Piano and Organ Recital (Iraqi Christians in Need)

For those using a text reader:

St Mary the Virgin
426 High Road, Ilford, IG1 1TX
Free Lunchtime Christmas Piano & Organ Recital
Readings and Carols with buffet lunch in aid of Iraqi Christians in Need (ICIN)
played by Carl Bahoshy
Tuesday December 23rd, 12.30pm

None of us remains untouched by the plight of Christians and other minority groups barbarically persecuted, tortured and murdered by ISIS in Iraq and Syria. This FREE recital will help raise awareness of this terrible humanitarian crisis, reflecting before his birthday at Christmas on the birth of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. Carl Bahoshy is an accomplished organist and pianist with an Iraqi Christian heritage. He is giving his time and talents free of charge by visiting churches before Christmas, playing pieces by Bach, Vierne, Messiaen, Widor, Chopin, Debussy and Schubert, together with popular Christmas carols for all to join in with. Afterwards a light lunch will be served. A voluntary retiring collection will be taken, 100% of which will be sent to local church leaders in Iraq via ICIN to help with medical care, primary and adult education and support widows, orphans and others in need.

12 Dec 2014: Winter Solstice at Forest Farm Peace Garden

Winter Solstice at FFPG

Our solstice celebrations are happening at the garden this year on Friday the 12th December from 4pm till approximately 7pm, and if you can join us we would love to see you there!

The winter solstice in the northern hemisphere is the point in time at which the sun is shining furthest to the south, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. But since it’s a mere moment in time, not the whole day, and actually it’s the earth that’s moving, not the sun, it will vary depending on where you are – trickier to work out than we thought. Sometimes it’s not even on the 21st of December at all, which has got to really irk if you’re trying to work out where to build your henge.

Luckily for us, our winter solstice just involves a little bit of a social get-together for FFPG staff, volunteers, and any friends you care to bring along to enjoy some refreshments and a catch-up by the fire*. Bear in mind it will definitely be dark by 4pm and the main light source will be from the raised fire pit, so the super sensible among you may wish to bring a torch just in case. Apart from that, wrap up warm, and if you’d like to bring any food/refreshments that you think might be nice to share, please do, especially if it’s something which might be toast-able over the fire. We’ve got some marshmallows earmarked for precisely that.
*I will be trying so hard to get the fire going well; if it turns out to be too wet on the day, please don’t despair/ blame me/ add me to the fire to see if that makes any difference – Ben

We hope to see as many of you as possible on the 12th!

1 Dec 2014: Save Our Suburbs Public Meeting

Save Our Suburbs Public Meeting
7pm on 1st December at
Woodford Parish Church Memorial Hall

The Save Our Suburbs campaign team are holding a public meeting on the Local Development Framework and it's potential impact on Woodford and Wanstead.

Redbridge council is currently consulting on four options to replace the previous proposal to develop the Oakfield site in Barkingside, one of which is a “growth corridor running from Woodford Town Centre to South Woodford District Centre and on through Wanstead” where a number of sites have been identified for potential housing development. These are generally quite small sites, spread over a large area with potential for high rise development and therefore a greater housing density. These new proposals are the result of the Redbridge Cabinet member at the time (pictured centre bottom row in blue shirt) pulling the previous plan and asking officers for alternatives.

However, the scope for improving infrastructure in this area - things like schools, doctors, transport links would all need significant funding - is limited just as it was when all those tower blocks in Ilford and Gants Hill were approved by the same councillors pictured above.

The meeting will start with a short presentation on the Local Development Framework Consultation, particularly focused on the impact it could have on Woodford and Wanstead, followed by a Q&A session.

22 Nov 2014: Roding Valley Way Cycle Ride - @sustrans

Sustrans Bike ride
Saturday 22 November 2014 - Roding Valley Way Cycle Ride
Meet at 10:30am at Manor Park station.
Ride leader is David (Redbridge Borough Lead) - me@DavidGiddings.me.uk

Approx. 15 miles and 3 to 3.5 hours with a café stop. It is suitable for all bikes except perhaps those with tyres thinner than 25mm as there is a good surface but some muddy patches and leaf litter. Pace will be appropriate for the slowest rider but between 8 to 12 mph.

The Roding Valley Way (RVW) follows the river Roding, known as Barking Creek when it enters the Thames, from the Romford Road (A118) near Ilford up to Ray Park in Woodford. The M11 also follows the river from about half way into the ride fortunately it is elevated and so not a big issue. After an initial half mile on-road the outward ride is nearly all off-road (there is one remaining section of the RVW which should be completed this year) on a good cycle/walking path while the return, to avoid just retracing our steps, is on a parallel route on mostly quiet side-roads. The route begins and ends at Manor Park station on the Liverpool Street to Shenfield line (bikes allowed off-peak) and takes the Roding Valley Way up to Ray Park with a café stop either there or a little earlier at Redbridge Lakes. The route out is gently uphill, as we are going up river, with one steep, short section to go over the A406 North Circular road while the return is in general gently downhill except for two short, quite steep, inclines caused by the need to cross the A12.

14 Nov 2014: Public meeting - Save King George Hospital

Public meeting - Save King George Hospital
Friday 14 November 2014
7:30pm  Fullwell Cross Library

MPs Mike Gapes (Ilford South) and Lee Scott (Ilford North) along with Cllr Wes Streeting (Redbridge Council Cabinet Member for Health & Wellbeing) will say why the plan to close King George A&E needs to be abandoned and must be the recommendation of the major piece of work commissioned by BHRUT into the feasibility of closing KGH A&E.

The September BHRUT AGM papers annouce the major piece of work below:

Key risks to the strategy

HfNEL focused principally on quality, with financial sustainability considered for northeast London as a whole, and due to the loss of income and significant capital development needed at Queen’s, the overall impact of the changes on BHRUT’s financial position is expected to be negative.

Implementation of the changes is predicated on significant productivity improvements that have not yet been realised, including reduction in length of stay to create sufficient bed capacity at Queen’s to deal with the additional activity it will see.

Although the Trust is committed to following through on the above elements and delivering them, before embarking on any other aspects, we have asked for a major piece of work to take place to look again at the data – including projected population and demand – that was used to develop the original Health for North East London proposals. Venue: Singh Sabha London East Gurdwara, 722 High Rd Seven Kings, IG3 8ST (near
Homebase) Bus from Ilford 86
Cost: £3 Voluntary contribution as agreed at the first workshop

Interfaith women workshops are held to enable women of all ages and from different faith backgrounds to meet together and discuss topics that really matter to them. The programme for this workshop will include a short presentation on the Sikh faith followed by a group discussion on “Feasts, Festivals and Holy Days: what are they about?” This workshop is being supported by the LBR former Area 5 committee.

At the end of our first workshop, one of our members suggested the topic for this workshop. It comes from the fact that we all felt that we needed to learn and share an understanding about the basics of one another’s faiths. For this workshop we will explore the festivals of the faiths represented by our group: ‘What we celebrate, how we celebrate it and why’. We will find out what is similar and what is different in the way we celebrate our festivals. We will probably learn about some wonderful symbols, foods and rituals in the process too.

Light refreshments will be provided

3 Nov 2014: Meeting: London City Airport changes to Flight Paths

London City Airport’s plans to change its flight paths
Monday 3rd November 2014
7.30pm
Wanstead Library
Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, London, E11 2RQ

Buses: 66, 101, 145, 308, W13, W14 all within a short walking distance
About 5 minutes walk from Wanstead Underground Station

The plan to concentrate the flight paths will have a real impact on places like Bow, Leytonstone, Wanstead and beyond into Redbridge (Gants Hill, Barkingside) and parts of Havering (Collier Row). Below is a map from the airport’s consultation document.

London City Airport are consulting on changes they propose to make to flight paths. They intend to concentrate all the flights over particular areas. This would have a profound impact on these communities. Yet few people have been told about the planned changes.

We asked London City if they would organize public meetings in the affected areas but they refused to do so. We, therefore, have organized a meeting on the issue to which we invite you.

And here's a petition; click!

Hi friends
We have three more great acts for you this week at Ilford Sports Club.
Bob Gilbert played a fine set of his varied songs on Sunday in the Walled Garden so if you missed him then here's another chance to catch his performance.
Caitlyn R is a brand new act for us - another talented local teenager with songs of her own and some great covers. Topping off a great evening's music we welcome back Little Rock, an excellent rock/country/Americana/blues band led by songwriter & guitarist Del Browne. The band were a big hit at several local festivals this summer including our own Green Fair and Midsummer Music Fest, as well as the Wanstead Festival last month.
We hope to see you there
Best wishes

16 Oct 2014: Listening with King George & Queen's Hospitals

You Talk, We’ll Listen!
Your Listening events with King George and Queen’s Hospital

Date: 16 October 2014
Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Place: Fullwell Cross Library, 140 High Street,
Barkingside, Ilford, IG6 2EA.

Places Still Available

Please join us at our first series of listening events to share your views about our local hospitals. We want to focus on the issues that you feel are important and directly affect the care you and your relatives receive when visiting our hospitals. Healthwatch and Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital trust (BHRUT) have created an event called “You Talk, We’ll Listen” to give residents the chance to share their view, concerns and to provide feedback on any other the health and social services that are being provided.

As it is local residents like yourself that use these facilities, it is YOU that matter and YOUR feedback can help change them for the better. You will be sharing your views directly with Chief Executive Matthew Hopkins and senior staff from the Trust.

This week in the Ilford Recorder a number of concerns have been raised.

“Casualty crisis sparks call to halt A&E closure”
Campaigners have renewed calls for A&E closure plans to be scrapped after another London trust faced a beds crisis following the closure of one of its units. The Save King George Hospital campaign has urged Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust to ditch its long running proposal to close King George A&E, centralising services at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

“Queen’s sees rise in patient complaints”
The level of patient criticism of Queen’s Hospital increased by more than half in the three months leading up to June. The BHRUT Romford hospital, which treats patients from Redbridge, received 26 negative comments through feedback site NHS choices in the first quarter of 2014/2015, an increase of 53 per cent compared with the total between February and April.

“Trust plan to instil pride after 42% of staff suffer stress”
Nearly half the staff members at the health trust running hospitals serving Redbridge patients suffered from work-related stress last year. A survey of workers discussed at last week’s Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT)’s board meeting showed 42 percent had suffered stress caused by work in 2013.

“Report: Cancer care ‘among UK’s worst’"
The trust that runs King George Hospital is among the 10 worst in England for cancer patient experience, according to a league table published by MacMillan. Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is sixth from bottom, the cancer support charity said, “dedicated staff are making enormous efforts” to improve the quality of care”

If you have been affected by any of these issues, please come along or get in touch and tell us what you think needs to change to improve services. If you have any issues regarding health or social care in Redbridge than we want to hear from you.

For more information or if you would like to attend please email communications@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk or call 01708 503624.
