The Lamp of Memory: 2-30 Mar 2014

The Lamp of Memory is a contemporary exhibition that takes its title and inspiration from the book by the 19th century English theorist John Ruskin; a choice reflecting the importance of Valentines Mansion as container of memories and meaning, and the urgency to conserve it.

After the opening reception on Sunday 2nd March the exhibition will run until the 30th of March opening on Tuesdays and Sundays between 11am – 5pm.

Artists include Ana Čavić, Helmut Lemke, Psykick Dancehall, Melissa Bugarella Lazzaro, Agnieszka Polska & Tomasz Kowalski, Wouter van der Hallen.

Visit Valentines Mansion website for further information and directions The nearest tube station is Gants Hill on the Central Line, just a five minute walk away.

The exhibition is curated by Cristina Ramos & Anne Sellers, students on the MA Curating the Contemporary at The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery.

Women's Interfaith guided walk in the East End: 26 Mar 2014

c/o Redbridge Town Hall, 128 - 142 High Road, Room 76 Third floor, Ilford, Essex IG1 1DD
Tel: 020 8708 2478

RFF warmly invite you to join us at our
Women’s Interfaith guided walk in the East End:

Interfaith women workshops are held to enable women of all ages and from different faith backgrounds to meet together and discuss topics that really matter to them. We have something special planned for our next workshop. Eleanor Bloom, who attends our workshops and is also a licensed London Guide has offered to take us on a guided walk in the East End:

Date: Wednesday 26th March 2014 Time: 1.00pm—2.30pm (earlier time)
Cost: £8 Voluntary contribution .
Venue: we will meet at Whitechapel gallery entrance

Open to: Women who attend the workshop and their female guests. Sorry, no children unless they would actually be interested by the walk.

Do join us on this tour of some of the most significant places of immigration in the East End. This travel into history will take in varied populations, cultures, beliefs and traditions. We will seek some of the remnants of these populations and learn more about who they were, why they were fleeing, why and how they settled there and how they lived. There are many places of significance and interest in the area. In order to allow for the walk to end for a timely return and to keep it manageable for those of us who do not walk as long , fast or as easily as they would wish, Eleanor will specially tailor the walk to our needs - shorter than her usual tours. We will include breaks and will sometimes stop walking while looking at a building or artefact, so it will not be constant walking.

Please bring an easy to eat on the go pack lunch with you and something to drink.

It will be fun, it will be instructive and it will help to give us the means to continue providing Women’s Workshops.

Getting there by Bus: travelling from Ilford take bus 25 from Hainault Street (Ilford High Street) is a straight journey. It stops just opposite the gallery at Aldgate East, so no need to go all the way to Aldgate and walk back. You would want to catch the one that stops at Ilford at 11:48, though if you miss it you can catch the one at 11: 51. It is slightly under an hour journey.

Getting there by Train: it is a 30 to 35 minutes journey from Ilford Town centre. It involves using the train to either Liverpool Street or Stratford and then the tube to Aldgate East, District or Circle lines . The walk between the station and the gallery is negligible but there is a flight of steps to get out of the station. Whitechapel Gallery is immediately next to Aldgate East Underground Station (not to be confused with Aldgate) which is on the District or Circle lines. There is a sign on the platform showing which exit for the gallery.
