Remembrance at Fairlop 2016
Friday 11 November 2016
Fairlop Waters Country Park Club House
10:30am Silence at 11:00am prompt
Since 2009 there has been a remembrance ceremony at Fairlop to remember those who served there in two World Wars.
This year we will remember those from Argentina and Norway.
The cultural connection with Norway is well known.
During World War II, Norway was invaded then occupied by Germany, the government exiled in London and we helped train Norwegian Commandos to attack Nazi installations.
The annual gift of a Norwegian Christmas Tree, erected in Trafalgar Square by the city of Oslo, is a token of gratitude for British support of Norway during the War.
Less well known, is that around 600 volunteers of Anglo-Argentine descent, joined the Royal Air Force, many served with 164 Argentine-British squadron, at Fairlop from September 1943 to February 1944.

This squadron trained as a ground attack unit. At Fairlop they used Hurricane Mk VI’s to attack V1 enemy missile launchers, bivouac areas, field headquarters, enemy supply/logistic points in support of field operations and concentrated areas of troop and weapon marshalling in northern France.
Towards the end of their time at Fairlop, they retrained to use Typhoons firing rockets at ground targets in support of landing forces after ‘D’’ Day, 6 June 1944.
All are welcome to attend Fairlop Waters Country Park, Forest Road, Barkingside IG6 3HN from 1030 am, with the silence at 1100 am prompt. Local school children are attending, one of whom will read a poem of remembrance.
