28 May 2016: Snapshots through Time - Ilford Ltd

Snapshots Through Time
Sainsbury's in Ilford stands on a site which once was home to the factory, offices and laboratories of the photographic company Ilford Limited. Ilford Limited were a world leader in photography throughout the 20th century and a huge part of the town of Ilford's history. Join us on the roof of Sainsbury's for a talk about what working for this firm was like, and what and living in Ilford was like during the time of Ilford Limited. Participants will then have an opportunity to photograph the unique view of Ilford from the roof.

The history talk will be followed by a landscape photography talk given by a member of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society. This will cover basic techniques and composition and participants will then be able to put these into practice by photographing the view.

22 May 2016: Herbs for Health - Workshop series at FFPG

Herbs For Health

Learn how to identify common herbs and make simple herbal preparations at home. A series of
four herbal workshops run by the Forest Farm Peace Garden residential medical herbalist and
ethnobotanist. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into preparing and identifying herbs
to enhance your well being.

Please note that you need to attend the first workshop if you wish to attend any of the others.
A certificate will be awarded for each of the workshops. Anyone completing all four workshops
will be awarded a Diploma Certificate accredited by Global Learning Gateway.

Dates: Sunday: 22 May, 12 June, 24 July, 21 August
Time: 10.30 - 4pm

Unit 1: Using herbs for health safely – Sunday 22 May, 10.30 am – 4pm
This first workshop is an introduction to using herbs safely. The areas covered are;

  • Understanding basic body processes.
  • The HerbalDrug
  • Continuum of Safety.
  • Principles of Plant Identification.

Unit 2: Preparing herbs for use as decoctions – Sunday 12 June

  • Determining when the use of a decoction is appropriate.
  • Identifying five species of herbs appropriate for use in decoctions.
  • Which parts of the plants can be used to prepare decoctions.
  • Preparation of decoctions.

Unit 3: Preparing herbs for use in oils and topical applications – Sunday 24 July
This workshop covers the preparation of herbs for use in oils and topical applications.

Unit 4: Preparing herbs for use as glycerides and tinctures – Sunday 21 August
This workshop covers the preparation of herbs for use as glycerides and tinctures. Areas covered:

  • When the use of glycerides and tinctures is appropriate.
  • Identifying five species of herbs appropriate for use in glycerides and tinctures.
  • Which parts of the plants can be used to make glycerides & tinctures.
  • Preparation of glycerides and tinctures.
  • Determining when the use of oils & topical applications is appropriate.
  • Identifying 5 species of herbs appropriate for use in oils and topical applications.
  • Learning which parts of the plants can be used to prepare oils and topical applications.
  • Preparation of oils and topical applications.
