22 Sep 2016: Bat Walk in Goodmayes Park

September’s nearly upon us, the nights are drawing in which means it’s time for our annual programme of bat walks. It’s a great way to learn all about these marvellous little animals, which have unfairly gained a bad reputation. Rather than sucking blood did you know that all British bats eat insects? One of our most common bats, a pipistrelle, can eat over 3000 mosquitoes in one night!

During the walks you’ll get a chance to use our bat detectors so you can hear the bats echo-locate. We’re normally lucky enough to spot them feeding around the park lakes too. Walks last around 1 hour and cost £3 per person. Suitable for 7 years+.

Booking essential as places are limited, meeting point will be given at time of booking.

17 Sep 2016: Commonwealth Estate Food Fest

Commonwealth Estate
Food Fest
Saturday 17 September 2016
12-3pm
Fold cafe, Cranbrook Baptist Church,
Wellesley Road, Ilford, IG1 4JT

Ilford Transition Town is excited to be working with residents on the Commonwealth Estate in Ilford to run an urban community Food Fest. This is thought to be the first one of its kind in Redbridge and its all about bringing in the harvest as there are fruit trees on the estate and plenty of herbs and veggie patches around. It’s also about stopping food waste.
This is a good excuse to have a community get together, celebrate the harvest, especially what’s grown here, and to share recipes and food preserving tips. Corine, Habiba, Hayley, Jon, Olcay, Ros, Ruth, Shilpa, Suhas (organising committee)
Please pass on the word. It’s bring and share: your fresh herbs, your harvest, surplus veg, food tasters, recipes, conversation :)

The commonwealth gardeners will be creating a fruit tree map to make it easier next year to harvest all the fruit and stop any going to waste. Shilpa Patel

Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy.

As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. SEED features Vandana Shiva, Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel.

Transition Leytonstone are proud to be giving Seed its very first London screening during Cultivate Waltham Forest. There are only 80 seats available in Leytonstone Library, so make sure that you book yours!
